Air Canada to offer free, fast Wi-Fi on select flights starting next year

Air Canada’s latest bid to woo flyers is “fast, free streaming-quality Wi-Fi” on all flights starting in the spring.

Beginning in May 2025, the airline will offer free Wi-Fi sponsored by Bell to Aeroplan members for flights within North American and ‘Sun’ markets. However, customers who aren’t Aeroplan members will still need to purchase Wi-Fi access, though Air Canada says it will be available for a reduced flat fee. Notable, it’s free to sign up for Aeroplan, so it might be worthwhile to join Aeroplan just to get free Wi-Fi on your next flight.

In a press release, the company said it planned to expand free Wi-Fi service to long-haul international routes in 2026.

Air Canada said that 85 percent of its aircraft will be connected on day one, and it will bring the remaining aircraft online throughout 2025. Free Wi-Fi will be available on Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge and “most” Air Canada Express plans, including the Express Q400s that fly from Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport.

The move builds on an existing partnership with Bell to offer free in-flight texting to Aeroplan members. Air Canada started offering this in 2023 and it’s available on over 90 percent of Air Canada, Rouge and Express aircraft.

Free Wi-Fi seems to be the latest attempt from Air Canada to appease customers as satisfaction with the airline plummets. Earlier this year, Air Canada started offering free beer, wine and snacks on Canada-U.S. flights, but that will stop at the end of the year. Meanwhile, the company just announced it will start charging fees for carry-on bags to basic fare customers.
