Apple followed up the iOS 18.2 release and the launch of Genmoji with a new ad promoting the feature.
The ad clocks in at under a minute and features a custom long called “Anything You Like” by The Dare. The lyrics are a rhyming list of Genmoji creations, which you can see play out in the ad. That includes things like a pink comb, a skeleton made of chrome, Socrates on mountain skis, a clock that can talk and more.
It’s a fun little ad that shows off some of the creativity people can think of using the Genmoji feature. While I’m generally an AI skeptic, the Genmoji feature seems like a really fun way to create custom emoji on the fly to share with friends. It gives a similar vibe to Google’s emoji kitchen feature, which I’ve enjoyed using to make funny and freaky emoji mashups.
At the same time, the ad definitely seems to be overstating how capable Genomoji is. For example, the ‘Socrates on mountain skis’ example didn’t work in our testing. It couldn’t make an emoji that looked like Socrates, though maybe it could if we had an image of Socrates on our phone. It also couldn’t quite get the skis right, with some generated emoji looking more like snowboards than skis, and one showed a wild ski splitting in two.
Of course, Genmoji is one of a few features that hit iPhones with iOS 18.2 this week. Other new features include Image Playground, ChatGPT in Siri and Writing Tools and much more. Check out a full breakdown of the new features here.
