Dreame’s Extendable Grabbing Arm Prototype Is a Glimpse of Robo-Vac Future
Dreame turned more than a few heads at CES 2025, showcasing its new X50 robot vacuum—that can climb… a bit.
While the Dreame X50 won’t be scaling the stairs at your house to clean multiple floors, it illustrated a new feature robotic vacuum cleaner owners have been crying out for years, and it’s hopefully the start of more to come.
The Dreame X50 Can Scale Small Heights
One of the most frustrating issues of owning a robotic vacuum is the time you invariably spend helping it cross small thresholds and other obstacles. In my house, the thresholds between each downstairs room are slightly chunky, and I regularly have to pop down to help the robot vac make the transition.
This is where Dreame’s X50 comes into play. This new robotic vac features what Dreame is calling its “ProLeap System,” helping the X50 navigate those tricky moments with the aid of an extending swing arm. The arm raises the clearance of the X50 up to two inches, helping it navigate those trickier areas without issue.
The Dreame X50 won’t climb your stairs to clean your bedroom, but this is a really useful addition to the world of robotic vacuums and something I’ve personally been crying out for over the years.
Having seen the X50 in action, it’s clear that this is the first generation of this tech. It was a little unsteady at times, and couldn’t get the job done on others. But it did work overall; with future refinements, this will become a must-have feature on all robotic vacuums, so Dreame is setting the trend here.

Dreame also had a nice little prototype on the CES 2025 show floor: a robotic vacuum with a substantial grabbing claw arm. Dreame rep Kade Maijala explained to me that this robot will move around your home and lift obstructions out of the way while cleaning, putting objects away in specific locations set by the owner.
While this was a prototype model, it looked like it was moving toward an eventual release in the nearish future. I didn’t see the model picking anything up, but the arm looked solid and like it could pick up a decent weight. I’ll be very interested to see this in action when it fully launches!
