One of the most popular ad and unwanted content blockers will soon no longer be supported by Google Chrome.
If you use Google Chrome, chances are you know about (or use) uBlock Origin. This Chrome extension, whose main purpose is to block ads and other unwanted content while browsing, is one of the most popular ad blockers. Unfortunately, uBlock Origin is living its last hours on Google’s web browser.
Endgame for uBlock Origin on Chrome
With the latest Chrome update, stamped 127, an alert message informs users that the extension will soon no longer be supported by Chrome.
« This extension may no longer be supported soon. Remove it or replace it with similar extensions from the Chrome Web Store ” can be read on the uBlock Origin detail page in Chrome’s extension manager.
On Githubthe extension’s developers have explained the reasons for this rather mysterious message. In reality, Google is preparing to abandon Manifest V2 in favor of Manifest V3, a set of rules governing how extensions work in Chrome. With the implementation of Manifest V3, new limitations will be imposed on Chrome extension developers. Since uBlock Origin is a Manifest V2 extension, and its developers have no plans to update the extension to support Manifest V3, it will soon no longer be supported by Chrome.
Change extension, or web browser
With the imminent end of uBlock Origin on Chrome, what is the best solution to adopt? The developers of uBlock Origin give several leads. Users of the Chrome extension will be able to migrate, if they wish, to the uBlock Origin Lite extension which complies with the rules of Manifest V3, the end of the deployment of which must occur by 2025. However, this one is somewhat different from uBlock Origin. Concessions had to be made so that uBlock Origin Lite fits into the new framework imposed by Google.
Furthermore, the end of support for uBlock Origin does not only concern Google Chrome. All Chromium-based web browsers are affected. Those who wish to continue using uBlock Origin, however, have another solution: abandon Google Chrome in favor of Firefox. Because Mozilla’s web browser, one of the last to not use Chromium, will continue to support Manifest V2 extensions. uBlock Origin will therefore still work perfectly on Firefox.
