No, this is not a new version of the EQB. Mercedes’ next SUV should be particularly equipped to take on the Model Y.
The next generation of Mercedes electric cars could well shake things up. The brand with the star should make a big impact in the coming months. In addition to an electric CLA that should mark the arrival of the MMA platform, we learn that the German manufacturer should immediately present a second model, on this same new technical architecture. And if the mission of the CLA is to compete with the Tesla Model 3, that of this second electric vehicle is just as clear: to challenge the dominance of the Tesla Model Y.
The information comes to us from our colleagues at Automotive News who believe they know that the CLA will be accompanied by a so-called crossover version, but which could easily be described as an SUV. For the moment, this second model is very poorly documented. Known under the code name X174, it should be assembled in the Rastatt factory, on the same production lines as the electric CLA. This small SUV could be presented by the end of 2025 for marketing in 2026.
Mercedes sure of its weapons
Of course, this compact SUV will be able to rely on the same weapon as the sedan from which it comes: a new-generation electric platform that promises a technological leap for Mercedes. The aptly named MMA is indeed very ambitious in terms of performance since the German manufacturer announces a record consumption of 12 kWh/100 km and a probable range of 750 km. But above all, what should allow Mercedes to compete with Tesla is the fact that this next platform is based on an 800 V architecture that allows much higher charging speeds. If Tesla is still the master of electric efficiency, it will have a hard time competing on DC terminals.
What emerges from this rumor is Mercedes’ clear desire to give its electric range a boost. Despite its qualities, the EQ family has not managed to establish itself in sales, probably due to particularly high prices. The new generation under the MMA platform aims to change the situation and allow the manufacturer to consider the electric future more serenely. It is also the best way to put an end to Tesla’s domination. Moreover, in the documents that Automotive News journalists were able to get their hands on, it is clearly mentioned that the objective is to market an SUV “competing with Tesla”.
